Worcester’s glove making heritage
Performer: Paula Clark

Paula Clark (aka Scarlett O’ Sparkle) performs a magical dance inspired by Worcester’s rich gloving heritage.

HH Fact: Elizabeth II’s Coronation glove was made by Dents of Worcester.

At its height from 1790 to 1820, Worcester’s huge glove industry employed over 30,000 people.  Large factories were built for Dents, on the site of Heart of Worcestershire College, and Fownes, now a hotel on City Walls Road. By the 1950s, gloves became less fashionable. Worcester’s last glover, Les Winfield of ‘Alwyns Gloves’, made gloves for many famous people including Margaret Thatcher, Cliff Richard & uniform gloves for the wedding of Prince Andrew & Sarah Ferguson.
